What’s a better way to spend this Friday the 13th or Valentine’s Day than jamming to a Gainesville native band?
Against Me! is returning to Gainesville with Creepoid and Worriers at The Wooly for two nights, February 13th and 14th with the local opener GUTS on February 14th. The February 13th show has already sold out, but there are still some tickets left for the show on the 14th.
Against Me! formed as an anarchist punk band in 1997. Against Me!’s most recent album, Transgender Dysphoria Blues, was released in January 2014, and it received much acclaim. It made it onto the Pitchfork Top 50 Albums of 2014 and helped Against Me! secure a spot on the Bonnaroo 2015 line up. This album is haunting and dark as it deals with the leader singer and founder’s, Laura Jane Grace, transition from male to female. The album opens with outright addressing the struggle that Laura faces everyday because other people do not see her the way that she wishes to be seen:
“You want them to see you / Like they see any other girl / They just see a faggot / They hold their breath not to catch the sick”
Creepoid has been at Fest 12 and 13 in Gainesville, so they are no one new to the area of Gainesville as well. Their self-titled album was released in 2014 and has a lulling shoe gaze sound that puts the listener in a soothing trance. I was fortunate enough to see them live at Fest 13, and they did a phenomenal job at The Atlantic. They are a band that I wouldn’t want to miss seeing live. My favorite song from their newest, self-titled album was “Sunday.”
